The Right Way to Wear a Black Dress to a Wedding
If you'd like to wear a black dress to a wedding, it's perfectly appropriate to do so, but it should be done the right way. Not wearing black to weddings is a classic example of a fashion etiquette "rule" that has fallen by the wayside, largely due to rule breakers!
How can you be certain you're wearing black to a wedding in good taste? To start, take a good look at your black dress. If it is one you already own, ask yourself if you've worn it to a funeral. If the answer is yes, it is probably inappropriate to wear to a wedding. In fact, if you're wondering whether a particular black dress is or isn't appropriate wedding attire, it probably isn't.
If you're attending a daytime wedding, black may not be the best choice. If your black dress contains a fun pattern such as polka dots or stripes or it includes other colors, it may be fine for daytime wear. If it has sequins or other flashy embellishments, it is best reserved for Evening Wear, whether to a wedding or another occasion.
One of the primary reasons women want to wear black to weddings is because the color compliments their complexion or hair color. If you look good in black, there's no reason not to enjoy wearing it! Shop around to find a dress design and pattern that lets you make the most of black without appearing to somber or risqué. Consider the variety of "black" available from top designers and manufacturers such as Sherri Hill dresses and skirt ensembles.
It's possible to dress up a solid black dress with a colorful scarf, shoes or other less monochromatic accessories. Choose jewelry that compliments black and the other colorful accessories you add to spruce up your dress.
When selecting a black dress to wear to a wedding, focus on quality. Shop name brand manufacturers that offer not only fashionable designs and styles, but high quality fabrics and materials. If you suspect for any reason that the bride may find your decision to wear black inappropriate, be sure to ask her if it is acceptable. If she expresses any reservations, do not wear black!
