The Elegance Of Pearls Through The Ages
The depth and luminosity of pearls have a rich, warm look unmatched by gemstones. Pearls seem to glow with an inner light, and they seem to bring out a glow in your skin. Pearls have been prized since the earliest artists designed jewelry. Pearls have been the hallmark of aristocratic jewelry throughout the ages and across the globe, as valued by Asia as by Europeans. Pearls can come in different shades: pure white, warm ivory, cool silvery white, and very pale pastel tones. Pearls are most often accented with crystal.
Every woman of wealth, position and power wanted pearls whether she was a Lady, a Countess, a Duchess, a Princess, a Queen or an Empress. The larger the pearls and the more strands, the better. A Grand Duchess ivory pearl necklace with ropes of pearls and clasp with filigree gold is the height of elegance. Ivory pearl and crystal chandelier earrings would drape to the shoulders to flatter a long graceful neck. A four strand, pale blue pearl choker could be worn for formal afternoon occasions. A gold and pearls pendant necklace would fill the neckline of a deep dæ#169colletage. A princess visiting Elizabeth"s Court could dress up her second best dress with a glitzy white pearl and ruby brooch. In Edwardian times glitzy ivory pearl earrings with a pearl and crystal bow choker would be the envy of the other ladies-in-waiting.
In more modern times of Art Nuevo and Art Deco pearls made a big comeback. Glitter and glamour were added to traditional styles. Glitzy ivory pearl necklaces with strands of ivory pearl and crystal clasps of Egyptian design were all the rage. Glitzy white pearl earrings with pendants of pearl, crystal, and sapphires dangled to the shoulders. Grand Duchess ivory pearl bracelets were up-dated with ropes of pearls and jeweled clasps. A silvery blue pearl choker might have a centerpiece of silver holding a sharp, geometric floral design in rhinestone and crystals. A pendant necklace of large matched pearls would be given an exotic design for the jeweled pendant. The quintessence of art deco style is seen in thick strands of pearl and crystal bow choker.
