There are so many ways to light up a room and so many people get it wrong! The invention of the electric light bulb was a huge breakthrough in the way we live our lives now. When Humphrey Davey first invented the electric light bulb in eighteen hundred it was to take another one hundred and ten years before the problem of a lasting filament made the product a commercial possibility.
Over the next hundred years the bulb has changed very little. There are of course attempts at producing ‘softer' and long lasting eco-friendly bulbs, but the principle has hardly changed at all. Of course there are the gas filled strips and surely the worst lighting is that headache making flickering long tube of the late twentieth century offices.
As you commute home on the train on winter evenings and travel past row on row of suburban houses; take a note of the different moods of light emanating from each house. Some seem to have it right with a soft warm lighting. Others however, could be making that fatal mistake of ‘the hanging bulb'. The single hanging ceiling bulb, without a shade, should be a criminal offence.
Imagine some ghost of a nineteenth century nobleman walking into a room with the single hanging bulb. Would his reaction be more incredulity at the invention or more revulsion at the harshness of the light? When he thinks of his beautiful candle lit chandelier he will doubtless creep back to the past a happier man.
Originally, the chandelier was a candle burning lamp hanging from the ceiling and the single biggest improvement in more ways than one was the invention of crystal glass. The high content of lead in crystal glass has the effect of giving refraction and reflection thus improving the power of the original light source. When candles were replaced by electric bulbs the effect was the same but much more brilliant. Some modern chandeliers use ‘candle effect' bulbs. These bulbs look and even act like candles. With the use of a dimmer switch they can be most effective. Imagine though, the Grand Ball at somewhere like the palace of Versaillesbefore the revolution. Giant chandeliers lit up with hundreds and hundreds of candles. What a spectacular site it must have been, and what a lot of work for the man responsible for keeping them all alight. In a palace the size of Versailles, this was a full time job for eight men! Their sole responsibility was not only ensuring the candles were constantly replenished, but also to keep the chandelier clean.
Cleaning was an enormous undertaking and to do it properly the whole structure had to be detached from the ceiling and each individual piece of crystal glass cleaned and polished. Lowering these huge glass lights was a very tricky affair as many weigh several tons. The lead in the crystal alone is of considerable weight and added to the structure of the chandelier itself; the total risk of mishap must have kept the cleaners on their toes.
